MOBILE — Dr. Charles Kargleder, professor and chair of the Department of Foreign Languages at Spring Hill College, will present the 2007 Altmayer Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 in Byrne Memorial Hall. Kargleder, the 2005-2007 Altmayer Endowed Chair in Literature, will present “Love and Literature: A Personal Journey.” The lecture is free and open to the public.

Kargleder has devoted much of his life to the study, research and teaching of Spanish and Spanish-American literature. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Dakota in 1960. He earned his Master of Arts degree in romance languages from the University of Alabama in 1962 and his doctorate in the same subject from UA in 1968. Kargleder served as a graduate fellow twice at UA and, through the years, has been a grant reviewer for the National Endowment for the Humanities.

In the 1960s and ’70s, Kargleder traveled to Central America where he did extensive research in the national library of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Through interviews and research, he was able to compile what today is still the most complete bibliographical compilation of Costa Rican literature. In addition, he has spoken across the country and given numerous papers about Mexican writers and figures from the Mexican Revolution.

Active in the study abroad program, Kargleder has been a program coordinator for Spanish and served as director for the program in the Yucatan. He has served as division and department chair, on numerous committees at Spring Hill and has been a student advisor and director of the college’s interdisciplinary humanities program.

Spring Hill College benefactor Nan Altmayer established the endowed chair in literature in 1999 to recognize someone who has fostered an understanding and appreciation of literature through teaching, scholarly contributions and his or her own creation of literary works.
