Delta Chi is Newest Fraternity on the Hill
Sept. 28, 2009
Spring Hill College will welcome a new fraternity to campus this spring. A committee of students, faculty and staff selected Delta Chi with input from the general student population.
Eleven law students founded the fraternity at Cornell University in 1890. In 1922, the fraternity officially opened its membership to men in all areas of study. Delta Chi, in 1929, became the first fraternity to officially abolish the hazing practices associated with “hell week.”
Delta Chi has 131 chapters and colonies operating throughout the United States and Canada and has more than 98,000 initiates.
The fraternity’s constitution preamble reads: “We, the members of The Delta Chi Fraternity, believing that great advantages are to be derived from a brotherhood of college and university men, appreciating that close association may promote friendship, develop character, advance justice, and assist in the acquisition of a sound education, do ordain and establish this Constitution.”
Alabama campuses with Delta Chi chapters include University of Alabama, Auburn University, University of Alabama-Huntsville, Jacksonville State University, University of West Alabama, University of Montevallo, University of North Alabama and Troy State University.
