MOBILE, Ala. – Every child should experience a happy Christmas along with the thrill and wonder of opening a present on that magical morning.  Coach Alison Sellers-Cook and the Spring Hill College softball team have been helping to make that happen since 1999.

Every November since 1999, the SHC softball team has helped process shoebox donations to Operation Christmas Child® in conjunction with Samaritan’s Purse and Tillman’s Corner Baptist Church.

Operation Christmas Child® provides children in countries a diverse as the former communist states of Rumania and Belarus to African states such as Swaziland with shoeboxes donated by American individuals filled small toys, crayons, coloring books, hard candies and other fun items along with the basic essentials like combs, soap, socks and toothpaste.

Each Spring Hill softball team member not only donates a box of goodies, they also give two days of time to help inspect, sort, process and ship the hundreds of boxes collected by Tillman’s Corner Baptist. Originally, the procedure was rather simple with only several dozen boxes to process, but over the past 10 years the operation has grown substantially in size.  A few years ago, Sellers-Cook enlisted the help of Coach Frank Sims’ baseball team to assist in packing the boxes into containers for shipping and then loading the larger containers onto tracker-trailers.

This year the Lady Badgers have recruited athletes from every SHC athletic team to help in the effort on the mornings of Friday, November 20, and Monday, November 23. “We’re always very excited to help with this project every year,” says Sellers-Cook.  “It’s a humbling experience, but at the same time it’s also fun to fill your own shoebox each year with these little surprises that you know a child will enjoy.  Some of our players fill three or four boxes for kids of different ages.”

Sellers-Cook is proud of her team’s devotion to this project. “For the kids that receive the boxes, it’s the only Christmas they will get, so we take this very seriously,” she says.
