Tile Sign Project

MOBILE, Ala. – Students in the Spring Hill College advanced typography class are exhibiting their project "Public Typography: The Tile Sign Project" at Government Plaza in downtown Mobile. The students, Efren Flores, Fredrick Norfleet and Allison Patrick are enrolled in assistant professor Todd Duren's course. They were challenged to create a more inviting and pedestrian-friendly downtown using original typography in public signs.

The students each used the computer to design an original modular typeface composed only of squares. They then used this typeface in their designs for street markers that might be installed in downtown sidewalks.

The students each built a prototype street marker based on the font they designed, using ceramic tile and used the typeface in event banners that would promote the city and set a new visual tone.

The exhibit will be on display through the summer in the atrium of the Government Plaza Building, 205 Government Street.
