Recent Spring Hill graduates Jennifer Moore and Cody Welliver are writing the next chapter of their storybook romance.

Both from Mandeville, La., Moore and Welliver began dating in the 10th grade at while Jennifer attended Dominican High School and Cody went to St. Paul’s in New Orleans. After spending the last four years as Spring Hill Badgers, the dynamic duo is off to graduate school in August.

Moore said that it’s been a fantastic journey. “My junior year of high school, I really didn’t know where I wanted to go to college,” said Moore. “Cody suggested looking at Spring Hill. I toured the campus, loved it, and got a great scholarship. Everything clicked. Everything fit.”

High school was also the time Moore began thinking seriously about psychology as a career choice. “I was a retreat team leader and one of my counselors thought I’d make a great therapist. My freshman year at Spring Hill, I fell in love with the subject matter. I’ve continued with psychology ever since.”

Before Spring Hill’s commencement in May, Moore and Welliver were doubly-honored for their contributions on campus. The couple was named 2013 Greek Man and Woman of the year. “I was president of Phi Mu and Cody was president of TKE. It was really an honor for us because it was a peer nomination,” said Moore. “Throughout our time at Spring Hill, we’ve both tried to better the Greek life—making it more service and community-oriented.”

When it came time to apply to graduate school, Moore believes that extra-curricular activities, service work, and a Spring Hill education gave her an advantage in a very competitive admissions process. “Because of the small class sizes, my professors were able to work with me closely and really help me understand the material.”

Dr. Jamie Franco-Zamudio, Spring Hill assistant professor of psychology, says that Moore and Welliver personify Badger spirit and pride. They were always energetic and positive campus leaders. Jennifer and Cody impressed me with their ability to lead a balanced life—contributing to the SHC community, sorority and fraternity philanthropies, and academic pursuits. They served as positive role models in class, in the psychology department, and across the campus.”

As a senior, Moore also completed a 15-month long psychology research project on the “Effects of Media on Divorce.” Her findings were unveiled at Spring Hill’s Undergraduate Research Symposium in April of 2013. “Jennifer also was selected to present her research at the Southeastern Psychological Association during Psi Chi session,” adds Dr. Franco-Zamudio. “She did an excellent job representing SHC and the psychology department.”

Moore begins her master’s program August 26 at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL) while her fiancé, Welliver, starts his graduate studies online with the University of Southern California’s Davis School of Gerontology. Welliver, who plans to become a nursing home administrator, has also secured a position at a local nursing home to gain additional hands-on experience.

Welliver won’t be the only one doing double-duty. In addition to her studies, ULL awarded Moore a teaching assistantship. “I was able to get all of my tuition waived and will receive a stipend. The first year, I’ll be helping professors prepare introductory psychology courses. The second year, I’ll be the instructor.”

Moore’s ultimate goal is to finish her Ph.D. with a focus in Forensic Psychology. “I don’t want to limit myself right now, but I have a specific interest in criminal justice—working with the government, police departments, or the legal system.”

Welliver and Moore plan to marry in the spring of 2015, after both have finished graduate school. This summer, the couple is taking a trip to Italy with family, attending a friend’s wedding at Spring Hill, and looking for an apartment in Lafayette. “We will miss Spring Hill and plan to stay involved in the alumni association,” said Moore. “We’re definitely coming back for Homecoming on the Hill April 4-6, 2014.”
