“Never give anything less than your best” is the motto of Dr. Dan Perry ’90, who owns and operates Spring Hill Comprehensive Dentistry, a successful cosmetic and restorative dental practice. Spring Hill College students, faculty, and staff need only to walk directly across the street from the Avenue of the Oaks to visit Dr. Perry’s office.

Dr. Perry, a McGill-Toolen High School graduate and native of Mobile, Ala., was drawn to the Spring Hill College campus because of the school’s longstanding reputation for academic excellence, particularly in the field of science.

“One of my favorite professors, Dr. Fred Hemphill, taught biology and was a stern taskmaster,” says Dr. Perry. “He thoroughly prepared students for professional school. You knew if you left Spring Hill College with a degree in biology—you knew the material as well as any student from any school.”

Dr. Perry, who majored in biology and minored in chemistry, believes Spring Hill College’s liberal arts focus is also extremely important and adds much to enhance every student’s learning experience.

“The curriculum provides every person, in every major, the opportunity to experience a well-rounded education,” says Dr. Perry. “It’s a way of learning that enables you to think differently than you might otherwise. We were always challenged to think critically, analyze issues from a global perspective, and come up with creative approaches to solving problems. Those are crucial skills needed for the real world.”

Dr. Perry also believes that Spring Hill’s small classroom sizes, one-on-one attention from professors, and diverse student population all add up to a distinct and positive undergraduate experience.

“The campus has a unique environment—located in a great part of Mobile—but set apart from the city in a special way,” says Dr. Perry. “My advice for anyone new to Spring Hill College is to get to know as many people as you can, and don't just gravitate to people like yourself. You can learn so much from other students of different cultures and backgrounds.”

During his four years at Spring Hill, Dr. Perry invested his time in numerous campus activities, serving as president of Sigma Chi fraternity, president of the Interfraternity Council, and as a member of the Student Government Association. The lasting impact of that involvement is evident—two decades after graduating from Spring Hill College, Dr. Perry still keeps in touch with nearly a dozen friends he met during his first few semesters on campus.

“I remember studying a lot and working hard, but the bond with my classmates kept me going and kept things positive,” says Dr. Perry. “I made lifelong friends on the first floor of Mobile Hall. One of our favorite things to do was play pickup basketball games on Sunday nights in the Quinlan Hall gym.”

After graduation from The Hill, Dr. Perry enrolled in the University of Alabama School of Dentistry. Upon receiving his DMD (doctor of dental medicine), he moved back to Mobile in 1995, subsequently taking over the practice of Dr. Harry Coker, who retired in 1998. In 2005, Dr. Perry moved his dental practice to its current location on Old Shell Road in the heart of the Village of Spring Hill. His practice focuses on cosmetic and restorative dentistry.

“I’m proud to be an alumnus of Spring Hill College,” says Perry. “I believe that I was prepared for professional school and my career largely because of SHC’s strong academic foundation. I’m excited that SHC continues to maintain its reputation for excellence. It’s great to watch all of the changes and improvements being made every year on campus—right from the windows of my office.”

Locally, Dr. Perry has been recognized as “Best Dentist” in the Lagniappe Readers’ Choice Awards, and his office was named a Mobile Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Month. Among national professional organizations, Dr. Perry is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the American Equilibration Society, and the Pankey Institute Alumni Association.

He is married to Kimberly (Wagner) Perry. They have three children, Joseph (10) and twins Liza and Charles (8).
