Though she’s been a familiar face on the Spring Hill College campus for the last decade, Joan Sands officially joined SHC as a full-time member of the nursing faculty in August of 2013.

Sands, who graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with her M.Ed. in counseling psychology, also studied at Webster University, and began her undergraduate work at the Lutheran Medical Center School of Nursing, in St. Louis, Mo.

Prior to beginning work at Spring Hill College, Sands served as an inpatient psychiatric treatment consultant, an associate administrator for Charter Academy, a long-term psychiatric residential treatment facility for adolescents, and as the director of nursing for Charter Hospital of Mobile. Sands is also an advanced board-certified nurse executive (NEA-BC).

SHC: Why is Spring Hill College a good fit for you?

JS: In the private sector, I oversaw staff development, and was responsible for making sure that my nurses were at the top of their game. I believe that I can do the same for my students here at Spring Hill College.

SHC: What do you find most rewarding about working with SHC nursing students?

JS: With young adults you have the opportunity to positively affect lifetime changes. Seeing the light bulb turn on over a student’s head when a concept is understood or a skill is mastered is as much a joy for me! Teaching at SHC is the perfect amalgamation of my joy of working with young people and helping nurses achieve their ultimate potential.

SHC: What are your goals for the SHC nursing program?

JS:  My goal isn’t simply for 100 percent pass rate for the NCLEX. I want Spring Hill College nursing graduates to be well-trained and respected nurses who are known, not only for their skills, but for their integrity, empathy, and compassion.

SHC:  Tell us about your family and life outside SHC.

JS: This May, I will celebrate my 30th wedding anniversary! I am married to Dr. John Sands, a partner at Pediatric Associates of Mobile. We have a daughter, Claire Sands, who graduated from McGill-Toolen Catholic High School in 2007. Claire is also a graduate of the University of Alabama-Birmingham, and is currently a third year medical student at UAB. In my spare time, I love traveling, reading, and walking.

This semester, Mrs. Sands is teaching NUR 310 (Community Mental Health Nursing) and NUR 100 (Introduction to Professional Nursing and Health). She also serves as a freshman advisor for Spring Hill College nursing students. Dr. Sands’ office is located in Room 108, Quinlan Hall.
