MOBILE, Ala. – Rev. Larry Gillick, S.J., director of the Deglman Center for Ignatian Spirituality at Creighton University, will give the Christus Theological Institute’s lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18 in Byrne Memorial Hall on the Spring Hill College campus. The title of his talk is “The Spiritual Exercises: Confrontation with Shame and Invitation to Honor.”

On Saturday morning, Nov. 20, Gillick will facilitate a spiritual retreat for the L’Arche Mobile community. Founded in 1964, L’Arche Mobile is an ecumenical faith-based community and a member of the International Federation of L’Arche, comprised of 130 communities in 33 countries. L’Arche Mobile provides four homes and an activity center for people with developmental disabilities and their caregivers.

Gillick, disabled by blindness, first discovered the L’Arche community when he was a chaplain in Toronto. Some members of the L’Arche Daybreak community would come to a chapel where he was presiding at Sunday Mass. For the next six years Gillick was asked to give a spiritual reflection at L’Arche Daybreak’s Wednesday morning prayer service. Two years ago Gillick gave his first Christus lecture, when he was in Mobile to facilitate a morning reflection for the local L’Arche community.

The Christus Theological Institute is a grassroots consortium of Mobile Bay area churches joined in the quest to promote a deeper understanding of our Christian faith. The institute is housed at Spring Hill College.

The event is sponsored by Christus, Spring Hill College and L’Arche Mobile and is open to the public. Admission is free for Christus members and $2 for guests. For more information on this and upcoming Christus events, visit, or contact the theology department at (251) 380-4458 or
